ALLAHABAD: Several events were held in the city to observe the World Hepatitis Day here on Sunday. The theme for the day was ‘This is Hepatitis, Know it, Confront it.’

Doctors said the theme of the day was set with an objective to make people aware about the Hepatitis virus among masses in rural and urban sectors and also to encourage its prevention, treatment and diagnosis. Of the five types of viruses, B and C are considered to be fatal, said doctors.

Deputy CMO Dr Anil Kumar said, “Food and water borne infections cause Hepatitis A and E” adding infections with Hepatitis B and C viruses cause an estimated 57% cases of liver cirrhosis and 78% cases of primary liver cancer across the globe.”

However, the accessibility of Hepatitis vaccines provides lifelong protection against the infections along with the Hepatitis B virus. Health officials said stress is being laid on to create awareness among masses as it is the only way to check the spread of deadly disease. The day was also observed to mark the birthday of Professor Baruch Blumberg, who was awarded the Nobel Prizefor his work of discovering the Hepatitis B virus.

Ironically, about 1 to 2 lakh people die every year due to hepatocellular carcinoma or cirrhosis
